Our divisions

Passion for sport.
Delivered for over a century.

Our passion from sport has been evident since we starting reporting on the action in the late 19th century. Our first dedicated sports editor was appointed in 1883. Since that date, we have been breaking exclusive stories and reporting on all of the major action from the world of sport.

On the first Saturday of the English football season in 1905 we started to report sports results and news by telephone and we have been first with the big news stories ever since.

In fact, on May 6th 1954 we reported from trackside as Roger Bannister became the first man to run a mile in under four minutes.

PA Sport continued to report on the action from London until a move to Leeds in the north of England in 1993. From there, we moved to our current operations centre in Howden, East Yorkshire, in 2001.

As the markets continued to expand during the 1980s and 1990s PA Sport used its traditional strengths of accuracy, speed and integrity as a unique selling point. PA Sport was also able to use its expertise in information gathering, gained over the previous 100 years, to take the lead among the sporting media.

Growth and expansion was followed by innovation and, in time for the 2001 season, PA Sport took the concept of 'live' information a step further.

We developed our revolutionary Football Live system, covering all the key actions from games in the top four divisions of English football. A football data analyst in every ground now 'talked' the match back to the data centre in Howden, enabling us to log every goal, throw, corner, foul, save, shot, yellow and red card and dramatically increasing the amount of data available from every game.

Football Live has subsequently been adopted for Scottish league football and selected International games.

The next major development for PA Sport was to move beyond the boundaries of the UK. This started in earnest with the opening of offices in Hong Kong and South Africa in 2004 and 2005 respectively and continued with the acquisition of Sportsticker in 2006. The New York-based company had been working with PA Sport for some time and was a perfect fit for the natural move into the American markets. The new company was renamed PA SportsTicker. Other acquisitions during 2006 included the multimedia sports video producer Sportev, who were renamed PA SportEV, and the sports business information provider Sports Services Group, now PA Sport Services. A 33% stake was also taken in Australian sports information provider, Sportal Australia.
